coffee

topic posted Sun, May 30, 2004 - 8:02 PM by  Martha
The other day I went to the store to buy some coffee. I saw that there was fair trade coffee for 9.99 a pound. I believe in fair trade, but being a cheap bastard I thought : Why don't I use this other brand's bag for my coffee and only get charged 7.99 a pound? I then realized this sabotaged the whole idea of fair trade , what's a cheap-ass to do?

How can one bean be fairer than another?

You have inadvertently asked the most profound question I have ever heard. This question, if it could be truly anwered, is perhaps fundamental to the very nature of reality.

Thank you for making my day. I will ponder this conundrum all day. In fact, I may get it put on a t-shirt. Hello, Troy calling. Mirror mirror on the wall.

Hey, Stephan Hawking, hold up a minute, I've got something for you.

Just take after my mom, myself, or one of my sisters (I won't say which one) and be absent minded and pick your favorite bag. I usually is the cheapist bag and fill it with your favorite bean.

Troy calling (?) Read the link. I've seen "fair Trade" coffee on occasion but it is not a choice in my usual haunts chosen for their low prices. I've always dreamt of having the money and the leisure to be truly benevolent in all my purchases. Instead, I sling out of the store, guilty even of shopping there at all, let alone buying the politically and environmentally correct product. (Still, it's not the bean's fault the farmer was cheated! Okay, that's not relevant. )

Green coffee costs half of what roasted coffee costs. You can also get it in bulk because it keeps for years. Home roasting is easy and fun.

Man, that has got to be the best smell in a kitchen -- I've never
experienced it. It's funny to me that some people don't even
like coffee -- I love the smell of coffee.
