down sizing my life

I plan to quit a lucrative, dead end waiting job this fall. Any job outside of the service industry is gonna come at a price- at least initially... any tips? I'm thinking about selling my car..

    Martha,

I can't parse what it is you're asking. Worse, I don't see any way to parse what I've written, below (I might not be able to say in a week what I was thinking when I typed it).

    Cool. Let's go!

    ---

The old advice was 'finish your education'. It implied formality in training (The School Of Jumping Through Hoops).

It's still true, except delete 'finish' and add 'keep up with' -- stay aware of current developments in your field.

People conflate the game about getting money from others with the game that's about digging what you do most of the day with your time.

People who relocated without any focus or plan didn't do very well (everyone who 'went to California' after high school or college that I knew, came back, no less ignorant, wealthy, focused -- the thing they were running from, they took with them to California -- and it followed 'em back to where-ever it is they fled to next).

Seems obvious the best first choice is to start your own company, predicated on the idea that you're particular about who 0wns you.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

    -Chris

No help here. Do what you feel you have to do. I just followed my oportunities as they came along. I never just stopped to see what would come. Cannot say whether it will be for the best or not. I do know you can take more chances the younger you are and still recover from stupid decisions. I'm not saying this is stupid. Quiting a job without a plan is bold not stupid. I never had the guts.

I quit my job without having another one lined up and it's been working out marvelously. I've managed to hustle work here and there and because none of it is regular full-time work I'm able to take a week here and there to go camping or whatever. Wasting your happiness in a job you hate is no way to live, regardless of salary.

I had charge of a car for two consecutive overnights. What a burden that was. I'm so used to being able to carry my transportation inside with me (my bicycle). As it turned out, the second evening was the one where a whole new problem with curbside parking in our town occurred: they'd just rolled out a new solid-waste (trash) curb-side removal system and it went into effect that night. So there was no place to park without blocking all the standard-sized trash bins from access by the robotic arms of the new vehicles that empty them.

I see people with cars, holding their head in their hands, moaning. I remember having to shovel one out. To find (and fight) for parking, constantly. Then there's the gasoline procurement and expense. And the *driving*. The complete abstraction of the physical space traveled through; and no time to pay attention to any scenery. Dependence on auto mechanics. Parts replaced and it didn't fix it, after all.

    Oops.
